Things To Know Before Attending

Welcome! This page covers everything you need to prepare for an inspiring and unforgettable weekend of storytelling, community, and culture. Griot and Grey Owl operates as both a festival and a conference with open to the public and closed opportunities.

Who Can Come?

All experience levels, all people, all interests are welcome. Whether you’re a reader, writer, creative, or just love of the arts. At Griot and Grey Owl, we prioritize and center all people of color. We honor the beautiful diversity within the Black community—Blackness comes in all shades, experiences, and stories, and this event is a celebration of that richness. We make room for expansive definitions and expressions of Blackness from Black, African American, Afro Latino, Carribean, or part of the African diaspora, this conference is designed to create a space where our voices and experiences are centered.

For those who do not identify as Black/POC:
You are warmly welcomed to join us for all of the free events on Friday, including the Opening Ceremony, Keynote Speech, and the Writing workshop. In addition, Saturday’s Book/Vendor Fair & Book Signings is open to the public as well.

However, Saturday’s workshops, panels, and discussions are intended specifically for those who identify as Black/Brown. These sessions offer a space where Black writers, storytellers, and creatives can come together without the burden of external perspectives or explanations. It is important to us to create spaces where Black individuals can speak freely about their experiences and stories, uninterrupted and in community with one another.

We believe that maintaining these safe, nurturing spaces for Black voices to grow is essential for healing, empowerment, and cultural continuity. Thank you for understanding and respecting the purpose of these boundaries as we work to foster a space that uplifts and centers the Black experience.
